Our verdict

The default king penguin day: the most reviewed, the only one with park entry in its listed price, and with guides guests name again and again. Book it only if the king penguins are the point — fifteen hours buy one hour at the colony.

Tierra del Fuego King Penguin Tour — How the Day Runs

About seven hours of the day are in the minibus and two and a half on ferries; one is at the colony. The reserve gives each group a visiting slot, and the ferries set the rest, so the order of Porvenir, lunch and the penguins can change on the day.

By road and stopsBy ferryKing penguins

Guests describe dolphins on the ferry and guanacos along the road across the steppe; one counted about 160 king penguins in early March, another about 100 in April. The reserve’s own staff lead the walk to the viewing line and explain the colony.

Five king penguins standing in tall green grass, sea behind — from the classic king penguin day listing on GetYourGuide

“Diego was an excellent guide, he was well informed about all the wildlife in this area. Of course, it's a long day of driving, but we made several short stops to observe all kinds of animals, so the time was well spent. The king penguins themselves were amazing, we were lucky enough to see them from only a few meters away.”

Dense king penguin colony in golden grass — from the classic king penguin day listing on GetYourGuide

“A brilliant day trip — we were very lucky with the weather. The ferry trip across the Strait was really scenic, the stop at the restaurant in Porvenir was perfectly timed. We stopped and saw dolphins and loads of llamas en route. There were only about 100 penguins on site at this time of year, but the staff were really knowledgeable.”

King penguins close-up, orange neck patches — from the classic king penguin day listing on GetYourGuide

“It's in fact a very long way to get there. There were about 160 king penguins on the spot we could observe for 1 hour. We stood about 100 m away from them and were told that we were lucky they were that near that day. The penguins themselves were interesting to observe, but we found the journey there to be long.”

King penguins in dune grass at a distance, overcast sky — from the classic king penguin day listing on GetYourGuide

“I left my accommodation at 7am and didn't get back until 11pm. There are a small number of stops on the way, but for the most part you are on the minibus, which had no luggage rack and no usb chargers. The guide and driver were lovely and did a brilliant job, but just be prepared for a lot of sitting!”

Tierra del Fuego King Penguin Tour FAQ

Is the king penguin park entrance really included?

The listing includes the entrance to the King Penguin Park and the Porvenir museum. The reserve charges CLP 20,000 per adult at the gate, so on this tour you should not need to pay it — keep your voucher handy.

How long do you spend with the king penguins?

About an hour; guests report 45–60 minutes at the viewing line, set by the reserve’s slot. The other 14 hours are ferries, roads and stops.

What time do you get back to Punta Arenas?

Usually between 21:30 and 23:00, depending on the ferries and the season. Do not plan a flight or a bus for the same evening.

Where do you eat on the tour?

At a restaurant in Porvenir or Cerro Sombrero, paid locally; bring cash, as card machines often fail on weak signal. Guests also recommend the hot dogs and empanadas in Porvenir.

What if the ferry is cancelled?

When weather cancels or changes the ferry, the operator offers a full refund, a new date or the changed route. Book it early in your stay.

How close do you get to the king penguins?

It varies by day: guests report from about 20 m to 100 m. Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens for photos.
